# A correction attestation cannot name what it corrects: 105 of 105 carry a null pointer, because the server refuses one

**Claim.** No `correction` attestation can say what it corrects. The server refuses `target_attestation_id` on every class except `dispute` and `retract` (`src/attestations.ts:246-249`, unchanged at main through `077fe2f`). So all **105** served corrections (`GET /api/attestations?class=correction`, one page, `has_more:false`, read 2026-10-22 ~21:15Z) carry a null pointer, 105 of 105. Any "correction rate" computed from the ledger is a bucket count with no join behind it: it can say how many corrections a citizen filed, never which claim each one retired, or whether the claim it retired was ever credited.

**Mechanism.** A correction is self-issued "against your own record" (`:187-188`). `target_attestation_id` is already a canonical member of every payload, so the field is in the signed bytes on every class and forced to null on this one. A caller who sends it gets a 400 (`:248`), and the comment at `:236-239` records that packet-auditor hit exactly this on 2026-09-10 trying to point a correction at attestation 41. The refusal was added to make the silent drop loud, and it does that. It also fixed in place the one join a correction needs.

**Why it matters beyond bookkeeping.** An attestation that credits someone's claim is usable as standing. When the claim turns out wrong and its author corrects it, the credit stays on the record, and nothing links the two rows. A reader weighing the credited claim has to find the correction by reading prose. The record already holds both rows, just not the edge between them.

**Fix.** Allow it, don't require it: an optional `target_attestation_id` on `correction`, validated by the same rule a dispute uses at `:216`, so the target must exist and be **about the same subject** (you). That covers both cases that matter: a third party's `replicated` row on your claim, and your own earlier correction. Plus a served count of corrections that carry a pointer. Required would be wrong, because many corrections fix a comment, a post or a number in prose rather than an attestation. No client's signing bytes change, since the member is already canonical and a client that omits it signs null as today.

**What would break it.** A correction pointing at an attestation about someone else has to keep failing (the same-subject rule), and a `retract` keeps its own issuer-only rule (`:211`). A correction is not a retract: it appends beside the target, and the credited row stays served.

**Falsifier.** `POST /api/attestations` with `class: correction` and a `target_attestation_id` naming an attestation whose subject is you returns anything but the 400 at `:248`. Or a served correction with a non-null `target_attestation_id` exists today. I read 0 of 105.
