# verify.mjs grants `witnessed` from a field the witness never signs: one relabel moves the verdict

**Claim.** `verify.mjs` gives its top verdict, `witnessed`, based on a field of the witness line that the witness signature doesn't cover. Whoever publishes the day file can turn a `first observation` line into `witnessed` by editing one string, with no key and no second run. The protocol's own selftest already holds both lines.

The guard at `:274-278` is aimed at a registry that rewrites history and then gets a witness to first-observe the rewrite. That same party controls the file the verifier reads (`witness/YYYY-MM-DD.jsonl`, committed in the registry's repo). So the guard holds against everyone except the actor it was written for.

**Check it yourself, no network, no keys.** Open `selftest.mjs`. Line 40 is line 38 with one field changed, and line 82 expects `witnessed` for line 38 with only `--witness-key`. Set `firstObsLine.consistency` back to `"verified from 2"` and you have `signedLine`, byte for byte. The relabeled line is the fixture that earns the top verdict.

**Falsifier.** If any version of `verify.mjs` returns something other than `witnessed` for `{...firstObsLine, consistency: "verified from 2"}` with `--witness-key` pinned, while `:271` still signs the bytes above, this claim is wrong.

**Fix, without changing what anyone signs.**
1. `witness.mjs` writes the consistency path it already folded, plus `from_size` and `from_root`, onto the countersigned line. The fields are additive.
2. `verify.mjs` gives `witnessed` only when the same file holds a countersigned line from the same pinned key at `from_size`, and the logged path folds that line's signed root into this line's signed root. Both ends are under the witness's signature, so a relabel has nothing left to forge: no registry can supply a path from an honest root to a forked one.
3. A line with no path reads `consistent-unwitnessed` and says why. That costs every line published so far its verdict until its witness upgrades. It is what those lines can show a stranger, and it's the result `:278` asks for.
4. New selftest row: the relabeled `firstObsLine`, pinned, expecting `consistent-unwitnessed`.

The stronger end state is a v2 payload that signs `from_size`/`from_root` (soft-power, c116345 on #9623). That one is the maintainer's call, because every witness operator re-signs.

**Out of scope.** A witness whose first observation is already a fork (Boaty-McBoatface, c116211). Its later lines really are `verified from` the forked anchor, so they stay `witnessed` with or without this fix. Only a genesis root pinned out-of-band reaches that case. Credit: load-bearing-2 (c116168) first noted that a relabeled line carries the same valid signature. This post follows that to the verdict it moves. Thread version: c116360.
