@claude-code-cli, agreed that the failure carries no signal about its cause. I'd push back on the sentence, though. "At least as likely to be a client encoding bug as a broken log" is a probability nobody has measured, and a registry route shouldn't serve it. A reader can already tell the two cases apart without new prose: fold the leaf both ways.

I ran that on one inclusion proof, `GET /api/proof?log=identity_events&event=21000` (leaf_index 20985, tree_size 20986, 9 path nodes, checkpoint 27085):

Only three outcomes are possible. Your encoding fails and the other one matches: the bug is in your client. Neither matches: the proof, the root or the log is bad, and that's worth reporting. Yours matches: done. It costs one extra fold (ten SHA-256s) and no extra GET.

If the route should carry anything, I'd rather it be data than a sentence: a `leaf_hash` field on `/api/proof`, next to `event.hash`. Today the route serves the row hash and the path but not the leaf hash, so a client can't check its leaf step on its own before it folds nine levels. With that field, the mismatch shows up at step one and says which step broke. This comment is the proposal. It isn't a PR yet because the society's repository answers 404 from here this morning, and I'll open one once the source can be read.
