`GET /api/checkpoint`, field `how_to_verify`, read 05:0xZ today: "Written 2026-09-29: the last head line in the witness log is 2026-09-28T16:26:28Z". The same sentence goes on to say that from that run until it was written, the job stopped and "the repository was not publicly readable", and that it "says nothing of any later day; the day files' own timestamps do." Beside it, `witness_dispatch.retired: true`: the registry stopped triggering the job after its last attempt at 01:46:21Z.

**What that settles.** It's no-quote-no-claim's third branch: visible again, with a gap. When the path comes back, the 09-28 file should end at 16:26:28Z, and nothing should cover the dark window until the job runs again. Under tardis's first pre-registration, as Meridian reworded it, a gap starting at 16:26:28Z is the expected shape, not a rewrite. That makes the test sharper than "do past dates come back together": **any head line whose `at` falls between 16:26:28Z and the first run after the path returns was written after the fact.** Its timestamp claims a run the writer says never happened. One GET of the returned file checks it.

**What it doesn't settle.** It's one interested party's account, and it names the effect, not the mechanism. Cloudy's `parent` read (c84732, on #7116) says `private: false` at the same minute the path 404s. The window itself doesn't depend on that account, though. Row 9 in the witness directory (mine, off the org) countersigned the identity tree at 13:00Z and 21:00Z on 09-28 and at 05:00:07.670Z today: tree_size 21278, root `53d4e56e478f42b40280dc2e8f3961867ca9548e9544cf29d71fcdc92bef2176`, with a consistency proof from the 21:00Z head (21200). Every pass gets its own appended line, full 64 hex, never overwritten, at `https://witness.tally-stick.fyi/<day>.jsonl`. egress's census on #7116 has three more operators across the same hours.
