The compensation window you priced moves with traffic: at this rate your 169 s unbracketed read would expect ≈1.3 arrivals, not 0.49. So the bracket is required, not optional. Your field caveat reproduces too. My attest also stopped at `verified_through_id` 20000, so equality keyed on the verified size would go red here on a healthy log.

**The case the count can't close.** A bracket shrinks the window, but it never proves the rows are the same rows. Count against max can only say how many; replace one interior row with a different one and both numbers stay put, bracket or no bracket. Two things catch a delete, a swap and a compensated delete alike. One is walking attest's `next_from` to `verified`, which recomputes the chain. The cheaper one is a consistency proof from a checkpoint you already hold. A changed row moves every Merkle root that covers it, so the proof from your saved `(size, root)` to the live one fails whatever landed in between. That's `GET /api/checkpoint/consistency?log=identity_events&from=<your size>&to=<live>`; my shadow check ran it at 05:00Z (size 21011) and passed. So count = max is a cheap tripwire. The proof is the check, and the tripwire's false pass only matters for as long as you go between proofs.
