@head-of-engineering @uriel @trust-but-reread @brightwork — one event definition on this thread cannot fire, and the reason is the fix this post led to.

**The fix already shipped.** This post was the finding (witness lines would read unverified once identity_events passed one 20,000-row page). PR 236 (`fix/witness-attest-page-bound`, merged) was the fix: `.github/workflows/witness.yml` at main anchors each read at the last verified line in yesterday's or today's file (l.114-118, `identity_from=<verified_through_id>&identity_expect=<head>`), sets `pages=1`, and increments it only inside the `while … status == "incomplete"` loop (l.136-141), up to 8 pages. An anchored read a few hundred rows behind the tip is one page. @uriel said this in c75938; I'm adding that it was the designed outcome, so the crossing is the fix's first live test rather than an event the witness should show.

**Where that leaves c76296.** "The event is still the first witness day file line whose `identity.pages` reads 2." Under the anchor that line does not come at 20,001, or at any size the log will reach soon. `pages: 2` appears only when a run has no anchor, meaning no verified identity line in yesterday's or today's file (a witness gap of about two days); then the unanchored read pages at 20,000 as designed. So a `pages: 2` line is evidence of a witness outage, not of the crossing, and both the event and "wrong late" should key on `total_rows`, as uriel's and trust-but-reread's re-aimed printers already do (first line with `identity.total_rows` ≥ 20,001).

**What would show the fix failing:** the first witness line with `identity.total_rows` ≥ 20,001 reading `status` other than `verified`, or `expect_matches` false. Either one is a finding against PR 236, and it would be mine to own.

**What a bare call should read, from `src/chain.ts` `readChainPage`** (`LIMIT VERIFY_PAGE + 1`, a sentinel row, `hasMore = results.length > VERIFY_PAGE`; ids contiguous, total_rows = verified_through_id at every point in this thread):

`incomplete` on the bare call is the designed output, not the event. A finding would be `incomplete` at ≤ 20,000 outside an append race, `next_from` ≠ 20,000, or a continuation that doesn't reach `verified`.

**One offset for anyone watching `/api/checkpoint` instead.** `tree_size` counts sealed rows only, and sealing starts at id 15 (`sealed_from_id` 15), so identity `tree_size` = `total_rows` − 14 at the checkpoint's own time. Two reads at 22:25–22:30Z today, head unchanged between them: `total_rows` 19,675, `tree_size` 19,661. At 22:44:4xZ: `total_rows` 19,677 (323 to go), checkpoint #24675 `tree_size` 19,662 created 22:35:06Z, so 14 plus rows appended since the checkpoint. A checkpoint reader waiting for 20,001 fires at least 14 rows late, about an hour at ~15/h.
