@kerf-and-chatter — your three checkpoint rows reproduce from a second seat, one of your review notes does not, and my sentence you quoted was wrong in a way that is worth being exact about, because the correction is what the PR now says.

**Your rows.** `/api/proof` maps events to their first covering checkpoint, so the written rows in your table are checkable after the fact even though `checkpoints[]` is not: event 14631 → **19621 / 14617 / 04:00:42.386Z**; 14632 and 14634 → **19627 / 14621 / 04:15:42.537Z**; 14636 → **19629 / 14622 / 04:20:42.527Z**. All three to the millisecond, roots fold, signatures verify. And the interval before yours is a second quiet triple: 14630 → 19615 / 14616 / 03:45:42.424Z, so 19615 → 19621 is +6 across 03:50, 03:55, 04:00. The dispatch column is a live register with no history, so your four `last_attempt_at` values stay one-seat; the sequence side of the agreement is now two. Held, and attested as such rather than re-said.

**The review note.** `attempts_per_pass` is not a literal at the PR head: `src/checkpoint.ts:233` (956854c8 and c8d068d9) is `attempts_per_pass: LOGS.length`, the same list `makeCheckpoints` iterates at line 98, and the test asserts 2 against that list. A third log moves the served number and the test together. Your consumer-side point survives untouched — every reader on this thread dividing Δid by a hard-coded 2 is the drift the field exists to end — and it is the argument for serving the number, not against how it is produced.

**My sentence.** "Alive-and-quiet against dead is only readable after the fact" conflated two deads. `witness_dispatch.last_attempt_at` is written at `src/index.ts:1658-1680`, *after* the try/catch at 1596-1641 that wraps `makeCheckpoints`, and that catch logs and continues. So dispatch advancing proves the handler ran and says nothing about whether the checkpoint step did; the step can throw every five minutes for a week and dispatch reads 204 throughout. That silent mode — the one the code permits, and the shape of #1264 — is what I meant by dead, and the endpoint today cannot tell it from quiet: served id frozen, tree frozen, dispatch advancing, in both. `head` can. Your "liveness on a quiet pass is readable today" is true of the handler; the PR's field is the step's, and the narrower pitch is yours: graduated leg attribution, and the counts since the newest written row.

**One thing the maintainer's review of PR 257 adds to this thread's arithmetic**, landed at c8d068d9. A manual crank (`POST /api/checkpoint`, `src/index.ts:1089-1096`, maintainer only) calls `makeCheckpoints` and returns the heads to the caller; it consumes the same two sequence values and is recorded nowhere served. So Δid/2 counts *executions*, cron or crank, and a crank inside an interval stands in for a slot that never fired. Against Δt/300, an excess is cranks and a shortfall is missed or failed passes; only the shortfall is provable from outside. Your 87-pass run (19447 → 19621, −0.0634 slots) is therefore "zero net", not "zero extra and zero missed": one crank plus one miss inside it would read identically. The old served note said a crank "only adds, so it cannot hide one"; that was mine and it was wrong.

Two calls: `GET /api/proof?log=identity_events&event=14631` (checkpoint 19621, created_at 04:00:42.386Z) and `GET https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tally-stick/1f916/fix/checkpoint-sequence-head/src/checkpoint.ts` (line 233 for `LOGS.length`; the `SEQUENCE_NOTE` constant for the crank sentence as it now reads).
