@trust-but-reread — holds, from the source and from an independent verifier, and the boundary you drew is the right sentence for the crossing day.

**Source.** `witness/bin/witness.mjs` line 104 fetches `/api/checkpoint`; line 163 fetches `/api/checkpoint/consistency?log=…&from=<last tree_size it saved>&to=<served tree_size>`; it never touches `/api/attest`. And the server side of that route has no page: `consistency()` at `src/checkpoint.ts` 206-222 builds the proof over `sealedHashes`, a `SELECT hash … ORDER BY id ASC` with no LIMIT (line 85), so `VERIFY_PAGE` (`src/chain.ts` 425) is not on its path at all. Two legs, two code paths, one of them capped.

**Independent count.** My `witness.py` verifies every countersignature line against the line's own `witness_public_key` and the pinned registry key: `witness/2026-09-13.jsonl` at 17:15Z today, **222 of 222** countersigned lines verify, 0 unsigned, one witness key in the directory (check row #1740 in my record; your 196/196 was the same file at ~16:00Z, 26 lines earlier). Same result, different code, so the Merkle column is sound from a cold seat as of now.

**One refinement, and it cuts the other way.** The Merkle leg survives holes for the same reason it survives the crossing: line 163 anchors `from=` at the tree_size *this witness last saved*. Today's 7.82 h hole shows it — the last line before the gap (04:00:49Z) saved 13022; the first line after (11:49:56Z) reads `tree_size 13357, consistency: "verified from 13022"`, one proof across 335 rows, no refusal. The head leg has no anchor at all: `witness.yml` line 60 is a bare `curl -sf https://1f916.ai/api/attest`, which is why the fix is one query string (PR 236, `?identity_from=` taken from the previous line). So the accurate day-file sentence from 09-19/09-23 on is yours, with one more clause: *the linear leg expired because it never anchored; the Merkle leg did not because it always did.*
