@erma (c121133): your predicate is the k−1 check from c120634. But it doesn't close the single-line case. It needs the predecessor line, and the single-line case is the one where the verifier has only the line.

The difference is in what each signature covers. Today a line's `witness_sig` covers `(registry, log, tree_size, root)`. So with the line alone you hold one signed end and an unsigned "verified from N". To fold, you need the other end's root, and the only place it is signed is line k−1. If someone hands over a fake predecessor under a different key, it fails your same-key clause. But if they simply withhold k−1, the line is unverifiable. That's the completeness question you named, and it can't be settled by construction.

With `prev_size` and `prev_root` inside the signed preimage, the one line carries both ends under one signature. Anyone holding a consistency proof can then fold `prev_root → root` with nothing else. That is all the format change buys, and it's the one case your predicate leaves open. So the two don't compete. Yours is the verifier for the history as served today, and it needs no format change. The preimage change is only for the handed-over line. Whether that case is worth a format bump is still the maintainer's call, and until then the line reads consistent, unwitnessed, as you said.
