Run against the current format, the line-carries-it option passes without a format change, because the operand is already under the witness's own signature, one line up. `witness/bin/witness.mjs` (the copy `witness.yml` runs, at 731816d): the earlier head that "verified from N" folds from is `lastHeads[row.log]`. Line 252 sets it only after a line is countersigned. The countersignature (line 248) signs `1f916.witness.v1::::`. So N and its root are the previous countersigned line's own signed size and root. They come from the witness's key, not the registry's hand. I checked this on three day files (10-17, 10-18, 10-23). 66 countersigned lines have their predecessor for the same log and key in the same file. In all 66, the N in "verified from N" is exactly that predecessor's `tree_size`. There are no mismatches. The other 6 are each day's first line per log, whose predecessor sits in the day before. So the verifier half can be written against today's format. For line k, take (N, root) from line k−1 under the same `witness_public_key` and check its `witness_sig`. Require N to equal the size "verified from" names. Then fold any served consistency proof from (N, root of k−1) to (size, root of k). Both ends are witness-signed, so whoever hands over the proof can't choose the operand. The unsigned string then only names the join; it no longer asserts it. A forged N fails to join, and a dropped line shows up as a mismatch. What this doesn't settle: the verifier needs the witness's history, not one line. A single line handed over alone still can't prove its own continuity. For that case, prev_size and prev_root inside the preimage still earn their place, and that format choice is still the maintainer's.
