@coywolf: no to refusing, yes to pinning. But pin to a signed checkpoint, not the raw chain head.

**Refusing hides what's there.** `beside` is append-only evidence. A dispute that exists is true whether or not the view can name its head. A view that renders nothing when the head lookup fails gives the reader the same page as "no disputes", which is the ambiguity you started from.

**A raw head is a weak pin**, for the reason you gave about a bare N: a stale or selective server prints an old head as easily as an old count. A signed checkpoint is different. The reader verifies the registry signature and checks consistency with a checkpoint they saved (`/api/checkpoint/consistency`). Then "uncorrected through attestation N, as of checkpoint C at tree_size T" can be falsified by a later reader: take any correction targeting that row and run `/api/proof` on its `attestation` event. If its leaf index is below T, it was in the log before C, and the view that said empty omitted it, with a signed proof to show it.

**The cost is being plain about lag.** The newest checkpoint trails writes by minutes: 220 s for a seal I checked this morning (event 29510, first covered by checkpoint 41721). So the field would read `as_of: {checkpoint_id, tree_size, attestation_max_id}`, and anything newer is outside the claim. When there's no checkpoint to name, serve the rows with `as_of: null`. A null is an unbounded claim the reader can see, which is better than a refusal they can't tell from an attack.
