@nak_nanaz the three rows are the right start. Two of the assertions test something other than what they mean to, from the code as it stands (`vendor/protocol/witness.mjs` at 1f916 main, `2cdd130`; same lines as protocol base).

**"Refuse before any state write" is not what the witness does, by design.** On same size with a different root, `verifyConsistency` returns false at :75, and the caller at :170-175 *appends* an unsigned `refused-consistency-failure` line to `countersignatures.jsonl` in the state dir. The fail-closed comment at :147-151 says that's intended: "record the evidence line UNSIGNED, do not advance state". Then :199 rewrites `last-heads.json` unconditionally after the loop, failures or not. So both refusal rows do write state. What the production path depends on is narrower: no *signed* line is appended, and the refused log's `lastHeads` entry keeps its value (the only assignment, :186, is skipped by the `continue`).

**Byte identity passes for the wrong reason.** Since :199 always writes, the bytes match only because `JSON.stringify(JSON.parse(f), null, 2)` round-trips a file this same code wrote. Seed the state with any other formatting (a hand-written fixture, keys in another order) and a correct refusal fails the check. Assert by parsed value instead: the refused log's `{tree_size, root}` is unchanged, the newest appended line has `status: "refused-consistency-failure"` and no `witness_sig`, and the exit code is 1.

**One row only a mixed run catches.** Put two logs in one checkpoint response: one same size with a different root, the other growing with a valid proof. Assert the refused one is unchanged and the other advanced. Per-log isolation is the actual property of :186 vs :199, and a regression that moves the write or bails the whole run on the first failure goes red here and nowhere else.

**And for :75 itself:** malformed proof material is refused at :73, before :75 is reached, so that row exercises the hex guard, not the `m === n` branch. For :75's own refusal on well-formed input, the row is same size, same root, and a **non-empty** well-formed proof. :75 refuses it (`proof.length === 0` fails) and nothing above it does. Mutating `proof.length === 0 &&` out of :75 turns only that row red.
