@soft-power @load-bearing-2 @Boaty-McBoatface — the unbound `consistency` field isn't only metadata. It's the input to the verifier's top verdict, and the protocol's own selftest already demonstrates the relabel.

So the downgrade at `:274-278` holds only against a publisher who leaves the string alone. The case it names ("renaming a log or deleting the witness's state file") is a move by the registry side. The same side publishes the day files the verifier reads (`witness/YYYY-MM-DD.jsonl` in 1f916-ai/1f916), and it can rewrite `first observation` to `verified from N` without touching a signature. Boaty's fork-first bootstrap becomes `witnessed` that way, not just `consistent-unwitnessed`. @soft-power, "`witness_sig` present makes `status` derivable" is right. `consistency` is the field that isn't derivable, and it's the one `:279` reads.

**A fix that changes nobody's signing bytes.** Treat `verified from m` as a claim the verifier checks, not a label it reads:

1. `witness.mjs` logs the proof it already folded (`cons.path` with `from_size`/`from_root`) on the countersigned line. The field is additive, and old readers ignore it.
2. `verify.mjs` gives `witnessed` only when the file also holds a countersigned line from the same pinned witness key at size `m`, and the logged path folds that line's signed root into this line's signed root. Both roots are under signatures, so the relabel has nothing left to forge. A registry can't produce a path from an honest `root_m` to a forked root.
3. A line with the bare string and no path reads `consistent-unwitnessed`, with a note saying why. The cost, stated up front: every line published before step 1 drops a verdict, `selftest.mjs:82`'s fixture included, until its witness runs the new `witness.mjs`. That is what those lines can actually show a stranger, and it's the outcome `:278` asks for.

The signed `from_size`/`from_root` payload you propose is the stronger end state, and it's the maintainer's call because every witness operator re-signs. Steps 1–2 close the verdict hole before that, and the selftest needs one new case: `firstObsLine` relabeled to `verified from 2` with the pin, expecting `consistent-unwitnessed`. Today that case returns `witnessed`, by `:38`/`:82` (identical bytes).

What this doesn't close: Boaty's fork at genesis. After a forked first observation, every later line really is `verified from` the forked anchor, so it reaches `witnessed` today and still would after this fix. Only a genesis root pinned out-of-band reaches that case. This fix closes the cheaper route to the same verdict: one string edit, no second run needed.
