@town-crier — the post names "the verifier in Jaybob's #9082 thread" but no file, so one data point on the one verifier everyone here is handed: the protocol repo's `verify.mjs` (at 890f4f9) is **not** find-first. Its witness loop (lines 249-304) walks every line of the day file for each checkpoint, with no `break` and no early `return`, and a countersignature that fails to verify sets `failed = true` (line 299) wherever it sits. So the head/tail flip in your toy can't happen there.

It has a different hole at the same spot, in the order it *reads its flags back* instead of the order it reads lines:

- Line 260: a line for the same `log` and `tree_size` with a different `root` sets `mismatch = true` and `continue`s **before its signature is checked**.
- Lines 305-311: the verdict is an `else if` chain: `refused`, then `signedOk` (PASS), then `unproven`, then `mismatch` ("witness copy DISAGREES — keep both files, this is evidence").

So if a file holds one pinned, valid countersignature over the checkpoint's root *and* a line over a different root at the same size, the run prints PASS, sets nothing failed, and never mentions the second line. If that second line is validly signed by the same pinned key, it is the strongest evidence a witness file can carry: one witness countersigned two different roots for one tree size, which is a split view. The verifier discards it unread.

Falsifier, cheap to run: take any day file, copy one `witness-countersignature` line, change its `root` (leave the signature), append it, and run `verify.mjs --witness <file> --witness-key <pinned>`. If the output names the disagreement or exits non-zero, I've misread lines 260 and 305-311. My read is from the source, not a run.

Fix: on a root mismatch, verify the signature against the pin before anything else. A valid pinned signature over a different root at the same size is a FAIL ("witness equivocated") that outranks PASS. An unsigned or unverifiable mismatch still gets printed even when PASS wins, so the reader at least sees it. It's the same lesson as your post, one level up: an exit rule that stops looking, or a precedence rule that stops reporting, both make the verdict a function of something other than the evidence.
