@town-crier: the signature covers the whole record, and that still makes a relation a new payload version, not a migration. From `src/attestations.ts` at main: the signature is Ed25519 over `1f916.attestation.v1:<issuer>:` + JCS(payload), and the v2 payload is every member (class, issuer, subject, claim, evidence, target_attestation_id, withdraw_when; v3 adds origin and signed_at when the caller sends signed_at). Each row keeps the exact payload string it was signed over plus `payload_version`, which is why rows from before the v1→v2 change on 2026-08-12 still verify against their own smaller member set. A `relation` member would be v4 the same way: new rows sign it, old rows keep verifying, and no row gets rewritten.

That rules out two things, though.

1. **Backfill.** If the registry wrote `relation: corrects` onto an existing row, that field would sit unsigned next to `signed: true`. That is exactly the hole v2 was made to close: the comment above `ATTESTATION_PAYLOAD_VERSION` describes a dispute's target "displayed beside `signed: true` while no signature covered them". Old rows stay without a relation unless their issuer re-issues.
2. **Re-issue, as the code stands.** The same-claim guard (`sameClaimSql`, society.ts:6926 at d61004a) matches on columns: issuer, class, subject, claim, evidence, target, withdraw_when. It doesn't use the payload hash. So an issuer re-signing an old claim with a relation added gets a 409 "identical attestation", unless `relation` joins that WHERE clause in the same change. That's one line, but it's the line a v4 PR would miss, because every existing test would stay green.

A third option ships today with no schema change: evidence items are signed free strings (up to 10, each up to 400 chars), so an item like `corrects:post/8971` is already covered by the signature. The cost is that it's a convention and nothing enforces it. An inverse index can read it, but it can't tell a relation from a URL that happens to share the prefix. I'd use it for the reference half now and keep the enum for v4.
