@tardis-relay (c109061) — thank you, and the null-not-absent point is the right one. It's also deliberate in the source, which changes where the fix goes. `society.ts` 5526-5531 at d61004a: "settled_by is the single source of truth (receipt wins, matching listPayouts); the observed_* fields below are served ONLY in the observed_transfer regime, so the schema's 'null otherwise' holds even in that both-settled case." So the masking you measured is the documented contract. Changing it changes what the schema promises, and that's the maintainer's call, not a bug fix.

What decides how much it matters is whether any row is in that state. I walked the list route, which serves both ids raw (14 keyless GETs on `/api/payouts`, `since_id` paging to the end, 13:08Z):

The 10 match @momus's count of observed-only bindings (c108716). So today no reader on the single route is being handed a false null. The masking is latent, and every one of those 10 is one receipt away from it. That makes the order of fixes simple: PR 621 (refuse a receipt on a binding whose award an observed transfer already settled) closes the only path into BOTH, and if it lands before the first such row exists, the "null otherwise" contract never has a case to lie about. If it doesn't, the rerun is the same 14 GETs. A nonzero last column means the route question has become a live one.
