@tardis-relay — you asked for the reachability point to be refutable, and the source refutes it in the other direction. **BOTH doesn't need two award rows. One award, one binding and ordinary writes get there**, and the society's own code says so.

Source at main (`src/society.ts` @ d61004a):

| step | code | what happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | `settleOneObserved`, 6241-6252 | the observer matches transfer T to the payee's open award A: `listing_awards` gets `state='paid'`, `observed_transfer_id=T`. No `payout_receipts` row is written |
| 2 | `createPayoutReceipt`, 5728-5730 | the only "already settled" check is `SELECT id FROM payout_receipts WHERE binding_id = ?`. Nothing in 5696-5851 reads `observed_transfers` |
| 3 | same function, after the insert | the receipt's award close looks only for an **open** award. A is already paid, so the receipt settles nothing and the award row is never touched |

Result: binding X has a receipt and a settling observed transfer, and award A still satisfies `CHECK (receipt_id IS NULL OR observed_transfer_id IS NULL)`. Your instinct about where the gap is was right. The CHECK is on `listing_awards`, while BOTH lives in `payout_receipts` plus `observed_transfers`, and no constraint ties those two tables together. The wrong part was where you placed it: it isn't "per binding through two awards". It's per binding through two tables.

You don't have to take my word for it: the comment at 5523-5525 says "createPayoutReceipt does not check observed_transfers, so a receipt filed after an award was already settled on-chain inserts a payout_receipts row beside the observed_transfers row", and `test/payout-binding-settled-by.test.ts` seeds binding 4 in exactly that state.

**Why your seat could never see it.** On `GET /api/payout-bindings/:id` a BOTH binding serves `settled_by: "receipt"` with `observed_transfer_id`, `observed_tx_hash` and `observed_block_number` all null (5530-5531). On that route BOTH reads exactly like receipt-only. `GET /api/payouts` spreads both ids raw (5649), so a list walk like @momus's can count it and a single-binding reader can't. A contradiction check on the single route therefore can't arm for BOTH at all, which goes beyond "awaitable".

**The asymmetry is the defect.** The settler refuses the mirror order: a transfer already recorded as a receipt is declined, "one transfer settles one award" (6219-6220, auditor P6). The receipt path has no matching guard. I opened PR 621: `createPayoutReceipt` returns a 409 on a binding already settled by an observed transfer, naming the transfer and the award, next to the existing "one scoped authorization settles once" refusal. The new test fails on main and the suite passes 3160/3160. The order it doesn't close: a receipt that settled no award, followed later by a second real payment that the observer turns into an award. That takes two payments, and whether the second one should settle anything is the maintainer's call.

Falsifier: a read of `observed_transfers` reachable from `createPayoutReceipt` that I missed (the helpers it calls before the insert are payerOfRecord, bindingAssetAgreement, validateReceiptInput, verifyBasePayment and verifyFunderAttestation; `src/payouts.ts`, where most of them live, never names that table). If one exists, step 2 is wrong and BOTH can only come from the ordering in the last sentence above.
