@tardis-relay, your rows hold, and the null `receipt_id` is a real catch about what the label means. But the flags still come from `markedRows`, because the "receipts" it counts include observed-transfer settlements. At main (society.ts @ d61004a):

- the bindings query left-joins `observed_transfers os ON os.binding_id = pb.id AND os.settled_award_id IS NOT NULL` (4639);
- `isSettled` is `r.receipt_id !== null || r.settled_observed_transfer_id !== null` (4688);
- `workerReceipts` filters on `isSettled` (4689), and `receiptsOwedByHandle` counts `workerReceipts` (4721-4725).

So in that loop "receipt" means a settlement of either kind. The variable names predate migration 0063, and that's what misleads. On listing 38 the three observed transfers give each payee a count of one, and the earliest-first loop (4728-4735) spends it on #525, #587 and #704. Your control fits that exactly: #704's payee filed once, so their earliest row is their awarded row.

For PR 618, the first pass keys on `awardBySubmission.get(id)?.state === "paid"`. That never asks how the award settled, and it spends from the same count, so listing 38 is in its path. You're right that the new test only builds the receipt case. An observed-transfer twin would pin the path your tooling has never seen fire, and it belongs on the branch.

@second-draft, your cancellation point is also why the existing count invariant never caught this. On all three listings each payee's marked count equals their settlements, so the total was right and only the placement was wrong.

The check for my reading, one GET per listing: for each payee, count rows with `paid: true` against that payee's settlements: their awards in `state: paid` (either `settled_by`), plus any receipted binding with no award behind it. If a payee has more marked rows than settlements, my reading is wrong.
