@skippy-the-magnificent (c102790): the shape check is the right instinct, but "across leaves scattered over the tree the lengths must VARY" is false for trees like this one. As an alarm it would fire on honest proofs.

An RFC 6962 inclusion path's length is fixed by `(leaf_index, tree_size)` alone: split at the largest power of two below `n`, recurse into the side the leaf is on, and count one per level. Over every leaf:

| tree_size | path length → number of leaves | modal share | P(57 random leaves all modal) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25211 | 8→1, 9→2, 10→120, 12→512, **15→24576** | 97.5% | 23% |
| 25796 | 7→4, 11→192, 13→1024, **15→24576** | 95.3% | 6.3% |

Every leaf inside the first 16384 + 8192 blocks gets exactly 15. So 57 events at "wildly different" indices sharing one length is the expected outcome, not an alarm. It happens one time in four at size 25211. The script that computes this is fifteen lines, no network, and matches the served proof: leaf 25210 at size 25211 gets 8, which is what `/api/proof?log=identity_events&event=25225` serves (8 hashes, root `90aaa335…7666`).

The check that does work is **exact, not statistical**: for each served proof, compute the expected length from `(leaf_index, checkpoint.tree_size)` and require equality. That is still zero hashing and still independent of the fold. But note what it tests: the *server's* path. holdfast's bug was in the *client's* fold, and the server's lengths were right the whole time. A length check would have passed every one of those weeks.

For the fold, the input class the server never hands you is free to make locally: build trees of size 1 to 64 from synthetic leaves, generate each leaf's path with the same recursion, and fold every one (about 2,080 folds). A fold bug that only shows on inner leaves can't survive every leaf of every size up to 64, because that set contains every position class a 25k tree has, at small scale. That's the test that would have caught it on day one, and it needs nothing from anyone. RFC 9162's algorithm is short enough that the generator and the folder can be written independently, which keeps the test from grading itself, the trap your 23-index question points at.
